The Best Little Helper Around!

We have been enjoying beautiful weather as of late. With the good weather comes lots of yardwork. We have been planting, pruning, mulching and gardening for the past week. I bought Lucy shovels, a rake, gardening gloves a watering can and lots of other garden tools so she could help me with one of my favorite hobbies - gardening! Well she sure has been a help - she helps dig, rake and her very favorite job of all is watering the flowers. Needless to say there is more water on Lucy than any of the flowers or plants - but that's okay because she seems to enjoy every minute of it! I couldn't ask for a better helper! I think it is going to be a very fun (and wet) summer. Hope you are all enjoying nice weather as well!

I think I will wear Mommy's gloves

More Adventures With Michael

Lucy has had so much fun this week with her cousin Michael. We have been exploring the city and having a great time. I don't know what Lucy will do when Michael is gone as he has given her nothing but attention. He is so sweet to Lucy and they have such a great time together. We can't wait to see him again this summer. We will visit him in St. Louis and we will also be going to Hilton Head with him. Thanks for being such a great big cousin Michael - I Love You!!!

An Afternoon At The Falls

Lucy's oldest cousin Michael is up visiting us for the week. She is having so much fun with him. He plays with her all day and he gives her lots of attention. Today was a perfect spring day so we went to Minnehaha Falls. It is a beautiful waterfall right in the heart of the city. The falls are in the middle of a park where we enjoyed a picnic lunch and played on the playground. I think Lucy may have Michael wrapped around her finger as he must have pushed her down the slide more than she has ever been. He also pushed her in the swings and walked around with her so she could look at all of the dogs. It was a great day!

A Girl and Her Bike

We have been enjoying some warmer weather as of late, which means we have been spending a lot of time outdoors. Aunt Maggie and Uncle Joe gave Lucy a bike for Christmas. We put it away until the weather warmed up. Well now that it is warm outside there is no getting Lucy off of her bike. She just loves it. We ride around the block several times a day. Lucy likes pushing her bike as much as she likes riding it. She especially loves ringing her bell! Her Daddy hides little surprises in her basket. She is always quite excited when she finds one. We are all glad that Spring is here and we can spend time outside! (Just so you know I am a responsible parent and Lucy wears her helmet while we are out riding - she was just sitting on her bike in these pictures:)

Oh there's my bike!

I better check my tires!
Did Daddy leave me a surprise?

A Ducky Day

Lucy loves ducks. Well that is she loves the ducks that she sees in all of her books. It seems like every other book we read has a picture of a duck. Now mind you a picture of a duck in a childrens book is always yellow and fuzzy. I've never seen a yellow fuzzy duck. Her daddy gave her a miniature duck - a real duck not a yellow fuzzy duck so she knows what a real duck looks like. Anyway she carries the duck around the house with her. She and her duck were eating breakfast the other day when her cousin Conor knocked on the front door and told Lucy to hurry outside. Low and behold there were two ducks on our front lawn. Lucy and Conor loved seeing the ducks. They laughed hysterically when the ducks crossed the sreet and then they followed them from across the street. They ran to try and keep up with them. They were upset when they could no longer see them. Now every morning when Lucy comes downstairs she stands at the window pointing and saying duck.

Why did the duck cross the road?
To catch up with his buddy.
So funny!

I'm going to find those ducks!

Conor where did the ducks go?

May Day Referral

It sounds odd but if I could pick my favorite day of the year it would be May 1st. For as long as I can remember May has always been my favorite month. When I turn the calendar from April to May it immediately puts a smile on my face. The grass is turning green, the days are getting longer, everything is budding or blooming my very favorite flower, Lily of the Valley is going to make its first appearance of the year, it's the month I was born and the month I married Rich. It seems that in May people are a little friendlier and happier perhaps filled with anticipation in knowing that the winter is behind us and the Spring is finally here.
Last year on May 1st I remember eating my breakfast and looking out my kitchen window to see that the flowering bush we have in our side yard went from being covered with buds the night before to being fully covered in pink flowers overnight - a sign perhaps?! It was a beautiful May day - blue skies, sunny and warm. I was so happy that it was May. I logged onto my computer to check my e-mail and could not believe what I saw. There was a message from our adoption agency that read,"Referrals Are Here" - They would contact us later that day with our referral information. I was in shock. We had missed the referral cut off by one day the month before and I had been so sad. It was less than three weeks later and referrals were here! Rich had left early that morning for a business trip. I called his cell phone and left him a message about our referral. He was barely on the ground when he phoned me back. The excitement level in his voice was something I had never remembered hearing before. We couldn't believe it - the day we had been waiting for for years was finally upon us!

I paced around the house waiting for the phone to ring. I got out my sheet of paper with all of the questions that you are supposed to ask when you get your referral call (none of which I asked by the way - as I was too excited). At 11:10 am the phone rang. I answered and the voice on the other end said, "Hi this is Roxanne is this Bridget?" I answered yes and started to cry before she even gave me the good news. She then said the most wonderful words I think I had ever heard, "There is a beautiful baby girl waiting for you in China - you and your husband have a daughter". It was almost surreal. We waited so long and now someone was telling me that I had a daughter. She went on to tell me that her name was Lin Xiang Xi - which translated meant, Big Fragrant Forest. She was living in the Yihuang SWI in The Province of Jiangxi. She was a healthy, beautiful baby who was born on September 6, 2006. Now I was really shocked - I couldn't believe that she was only 7 months old. She gave me all of the pertinent information and told me we would receive the packet with her picture the following day.

I immediately phoned Rich and told him our great news - I could feel his excitement and happiness through the phone. He told me he would cancel the rest of his trip and fly home in time to receive the UPS package. I then went on to call my family and friends. Everyone was so happy and excited for us.

After making all of my phone calls I went to find my 2006 calendar . I had kept a calendar from the time we started the adoption process and wrote down what I did every day - even if it was trivial in hopes to remember what was happening on the day that Lucy was born. For as long as I can remember when my mom calls me on my birthday she always tells me what the day was like when I was born. She tells me that it was sunny and very warm and that it still holds the record for the warmest temperature in St. Louis for that date. I looked up September 6 and remembered the day perfectly, as I had gone out to lunch with a girlfriend and Rich and I went to the Twins baseball game that evening. I remember it being a sunny, warm day as Rich and I took the train to the game and walked around downtown a bit before the game started. It made me happy to know that I knew where I was and what I was doing on the day that Lucy was born. I can now tell her that it was a beautiful sunny day on the day she was born as well as on the day we received her referral.

That evening my friend Tiffany had an impromptu gathering of my friends in the neighborhood as she didn't want me to celebrate alone since Rich was out of town. We all got together at her house and toasted our good news. We got out the Atlas and all looked at the Province where Lucy was living. It was a perfect evening. When I walked home that night I remember being so happy and excited that I don't even think my feet touched the ground.

Rich came home and we waited anxiously for the UPS package to arrive. My neighbors called me telling me that the UPS truck was sighted in the neighborhood. I literally stood at the window waiting for the driver. When he finally pulled up I ran out the front door and down the walkway. He looked at me rather oddly and I then explained what was in the package. We brought the envelope inside and I just stared at it. I gave it to Rich to open - he pulled out the documents and there in front of our eyes was a picture of the sweetest little girl I had ever seen in my life. We both screamed and then starting jumping up and down -I could not believe that this sweet little girl was our daughter. There were several pictures and in each one she was covered from head to toe in clothing. A big puffy orange and yellow coat covered her body as well as her hands. I wondered what was under all of those layers. I wasn't even sure when the pictures were taken - nor did I care. I just looked at them in amazement. I kissed that sweet picture for the first of what seems to be a million times. I wanted to get on a plane and meet her that day. Rich made copies of the pictures and we put them all over the house. I kept one in my car, I had one in my wallet and in my purse as well as in my gym bag. I would show them to everyone I saw - whether I knew them or not. I kept one in a frame on my nightstand and gave it a little kiss every night when I went to bed and every morning when I woke up.

I'm not sure I ever believed that you could love someone before knowing them - but I knew from the moment I looked at her picture that I loved Lucy. I had been waiting for her for such a long time and now here she was! I loved this sweet little girl who was waiting half way around the world for us to come bring her home.We have grown to love her in a way I never knew possible but I loved her from the first minute I laid eyes on her. I still look at her her referral pictures and give them a little kiss even though she is in the room next door. May 1 will continue to be my favorite day of the year, but May 1, 2007 will be one of the best days of my life!

We love you sweet Lucy - We can't imagine our lives without you!!!
One year later and I'm still not sure my feet have touched the ground!
